Sunday School

The 2009-2010 Sunday School year begins on September 13th at 9:45am.  Classes run concurrently with the 10:00 Service, through the Sign of Peace, when the children rejoin their families in time to celebrate the Mass.

Did you know that our Sunday School Program employs alternative teaching techniques like yoga, nature walks and meditation to convey the weekly lesson?  New “offerings in the making” include monthly youth masses, community projects led by our middle school kids, and discussion of “hot topics” like the inappropriate use of media.

As we prepare to teach a lectionary-based curriculum, we have a favor to ask of YOU!  Please take a moment to let us know if you have children interested in attending our program this year.  Your response will allow us to determine class size and answer the question, “Do we have enough children to open Children’s Chapel for ages 4 & 5?”  Traditionally, Children’s Chapel has run through the entire 10:00 Service.  Based on last year’s enrollment, we are currently planning for three classes to accommodate Grades 1-3, 4-5, and 6-8.  An additional class (Children’s Chapel) will call for at least two more volunteer teachers, so consider this ministry.  Our current volunteers share the load by assigning 2-3 teachers per age group, so each one only teaches once or twice a month.

In your email response to skozub at comcast.net, we ask that you include the following information:

Child’s Name

Parent(s) Name(s)

Child’s Age

Child’s Current Grade in School

Parent’s email and phone number

Thank you for your assistance.  Feel free to email questions, concerns, suggestions and especially offers to help us teach our children.  Please respond at your earliest convenience. skozub at comcast.net

Children from infancy to age 3 are well taken care of by Mary Jane Van Derveer, who is in charge of the nursery. Stop by, introduce yourself, and check out our well-equipped and secure nursery (10:00am service).

Children in pre-school attend the Children's Chapel program (9:45am service).

This year we have two Sunday School classes:  Grades K-3, and Grades 4-8.

Teachers at the K-3 level include:  Barbara Rivera, Amy Geoffroy, June Scheller, and Dianne Zimmerman.

At the 4-8 Grade levels are: Karen Gough, Suzanne Kozub, Barbara Lambiase, and Debbie Wisniewski.

Ginny Wetzel is our Special Activities Volunteer (yoga/ nature walks, etc.).

Sunday school begins at 9.45, fifteen minutes before the 10AM service begins.

A subgroup of the teachers are developing their own curriculum with guidance from Fr. Jonathan.  There are monthly themes, each progressing in time sequence as they appear in the Bible so as to give the children a sense for how the stories all fit together.  September’s theme is Creation (The Creation Story, The Adam & Eve story, and Noah’s Ark)

We will be holding monthly meetings for the teachers (everyone else welcome) on the last Sunday of each month right after church.
